Backing sits beneath the fabric. Its type and removal method need to suit the fabric, design, and instructions for the project.

Choose stabilizer for the fabric you want to embroider.
Stable wovens often start with tear-away; knits you will wash usually need cut-away; towels need backing and topping decided separately. Open the stabilizer chart when you know the fabric.
Then measure the cut your hooping method needs. If you use a Brother PE800, PE900, SE600, SE630, or SE700, check the model lookup before choosing a hoop or file.

Separate backing, topping, and cut size
A roll can be the right size and still be the wrong material. Decide the project layers before the package size.
Topping
Add a surface layer only when needed.
Topping and structural backing do different jobs. Check the exact water-soluble product and the project instructions before using it above the fabric.
