Choose the material for the project first. Then measure the full cut, including the margin required by your hooping method. A roll fits only when that rectangle fits its width and length in an allowed orientation.
Measure the piece your hooping method needs
Use the cut size required by your actual hoop and method, not the advertised sewing field alone. Measure it directly or follow the relevant instructions. The calculator compares purchase sizes after you supply that rectangle.
A documented University of Illinois hooping workflow shows stabilizer extending beyond the hoop. That margin belongs to the documented workflow; it is not a universal measurement for every machine.

Compare rolls by usable cuts
Compare rolls made from the material your project needs. A wider roll may produce more cuts across its width, but an awkward fit can leave more material unused. The calculator counts only full rectangles.
For a roll with width W and length L, and a required cut a × b, the direct-orientation estimate is:
floor(W ÷ a) × floor(L ÷ b) = full usable pieces
When rotation is explicitly permitted, the worksheet also checks floor(W ÷ b) × floor(L ÷ a) and keeps the larger whole-piece result.
This is a uniform grid. It does not solve mixed-orientation packing, account for flaws, or decide whether a chosen material provides the right support.
Work out usable pieces and offcuts
Use the full-piece yield to compare packages. If you enter a price, the calculator divides it by that yield. The result compares quantity and cost; it does not compare stabilizer performance.

Decide whether precut sheets are worth the difference
Precut sheets save cutting only when their dimensions suit your setup. Compare them with a roll made from the same stabilizer type, then decide whether the convenience is worth the difference in cost per usable piece.
The calculator checks how many full cuts fit on each sheet, applies the quantity in the pack, and divides the entered pack price by the total usable cuts. It does not compare quality, storage, handling, or stitch-out results.
Know what this worksheet cannot tell you
A fit result means the entered rectangle can be cut from the entered package size. It does not establish a universal 4×4 or 5×7 cut, machine compatibility, suitable support, or freedom from puckering.
Use the design and machine instructions for technique. Keep directional material in its required orientation, and verify model-specific dimensions and the exact product before ordering.
