Plan around the 4 × 4 inch field
Brother lists a maximum embroidery area of 4 × 4 inches and includes a medium 4 × 4 inch embroidery frame. That measurement is the design field, not a promise that every design or fabric piece fits the hoop. Check the design's dimensions on the machine before starting, leave room for the frame's inner edge, and choose a design comfortably inside the field.
The machine also sews, but its sewing features do not enlarge the embroidery area. For larger designs, compare the SE700 with other Brother models in the Brother embroidery setup comparison.

First setup checklist
- Set the machine on a steady surface and connect power as described in the operation manual.
- Install the embroidery foot and attach the embroidery unit and frame as shown in the manual. Keep hands clear of the moving carriage.
- Thread the upper thread and prepare/install the bobbin by following the manual's diagrams. Check that both thread paths are seated correctly before stitching.
- Choose a stable woven scrap and hoop it with a suitable embroidery stabilizer. For a first test, medium-weight tear-away is a reasonable starting point on stable, non-stretch fabric; use cut-away support for knits or other stretchy fabric. Follow the stabilizer label and fabric needs.
- Load a built-in design or transfer a design that fits the field. Confirm its placement and size, then stitch a test before using the project fabric.
Use the Brother SE700 Operation Manual (PDF) for exact threading, bobbin, embroidery-unit, and hooping steps. This checklist is an overview, not a replacement for the illustrated instructions.
Choose a design transfer method
Brother lists wireless transfer through its Artspira app and Design Database Transfer software. Brother says Design Database Transfer can send files from a PC over Wi-Fi without a USB connection; Artspira can also send designs wirelessly. Pick one method, follow Brother's current software instructions, and check that the design fits the 4 × 4 inch field before stitching.
See Brother's SE700 product details and SE700 support page for current transfer options.
Start with a short supply list
For an initial test, use embroidery thread compatible with the design, the bobbin thread specified by Brother, fabric you can practice on, and stabilizer suited to that fabric. Add topping only when a textured surface needs help staying out of the stitches. You do not need a large collection of stabilizers to make the first sample.
Browse the embroidery setup supplies guide for basic tools and the stabilizer guide to choose backing. Check the machine manual and each supply's instructions when selecting thread and needle.
